Jaguar Land Rover to Move Discovery SUV Production to Slovakia
The company warned that there may be some job losses in the United Kingdom as a result.
A JLR spokesman said: 'The decision to move the Land Rover Discovery to Slovakia and the potential losses of some agency employed staff in the United Kingdom is a tough one but forms part of our long-term manufacturing strategy as we transform our business globally'.
The company, owned by India's Tata Motors, builds almost one in three of Britain's 1.7 millions cars but is producing its first electric vehicle, the I-Pace, in Austria.
Discovery production will be moved from the beginning of 2019, meaning job cuts at the Solihull plant are possible before it ramps up staffing again, the people said.
After its makeover, the plant will produce the new Range Rover and Range Rover Sport models. And while we don't know how much that investment adds up to, it's likely to be in the hundred of millions of pounds. Jaguar Land Rover announced plans to move production of the new Disco from Solihull in the West Midlands to Nitra in Slovakia, putting 1800 agency jobs at risk.
JLR released a statement on the impact on jobs: "The decision to move the Land Rover Discovery to Slovakia and the potential losses of some agency-employed staff in the United Kingdom is a tough one but forms part of our long-term manufacturing strategy as we transform our business globally".
"The potential losses of some agency employed staff in the United Kingdom is a tough one but forms part of our long-term manufacturing strategy as we transform our business globally", the company said in a statement. It is possible a new family of electrified and electric JLR cars coming from next year, including the relaunched XJ and Range Rover EV, codenamed Road Rover and expected to be launched before the start of the next decade, could be built at the plant, as part of JLR's desire to build electric cars in the UK.
The Solihull factory, where the Discovery is manufactured, will be used to build a new generation of Range Rover models, the firm said.
The company will cut 1,000 jobs and reduce production at two of its English factories as demand for diesel cars slumps in the face of higher taxes and a regulatory crackdown. JLR also builds the SUV in Changshu, China.
The manufacturer said the new Range Rover Velar, the Jaguar E-PACE and the Land Rover Discovery helped it sell 48,281 vehicles during the month, a 6.1 per cent rise on the same period in 2017.
