Hurricane Bud strengthening off western coast of Mexico

Tropical Depression Three-E Forms South of Mexico; Aletta Rapidly Weakening South of Baja California

Hurricane Bud, now a Category 3 storm with winds of 125 miles per hour, continued to spin off Mexico's west coast Tuesday, the National Hurricane Center said.

The NHC said Bud was about 365 kilometers southwest of Cabo Corrientes, Jalisco, and 560 kilometers south-southeast of Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur, at 4:00am.

Parts of Mexico's Pacific coast, including the port city of Manzanillo, have been placed under a tropical storm watch with the eastern edge of Hurricane Bud potentially scraping the shoreline as it moves north.

The National Hurricane Center is monitoring an area of storms over the western Caribbean Sea. Rainfall of 3 to 6 inches (75 to 150 millimeters), with isolated patches of 10 inches (250 millimeters), was possible over much of that region into Tuesday afternoon.

The second Eastern North Pacific hurricane of the season is whipping up 120 miles per hour winds but moving at a glacial pace of about 7 miles per hour.

The heavy rain could cause deadly flash floods and mudslides, the NHC said.

It is expected to have weakened to a tropical storm by the with periods of rain and gusty winds.

NOAA Weather Prediction Centre meteorologist Alex Lamers said it was only the third time on record the first two named Eastern Pacific storms of the season became major hurricanes.

The hurricane will churn up the ocean water along the Mexican coast, which could cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions, the hurricane center said.

The Miami-based US National Hurricane Center offered similar data, but said it would start to slowly lose steam as it continues on a northwest track on Tuesday.
