Net neutrality repeal takes effect Monday

The Repeal of Net Neutrality Is Official. Here’s How That Could Affect You.

Net Neutrality Ends Tomorrow, FCC On Track To Remove Rules As Scheduled

Critics of net neutrality, including the Trump administration, say such rules impeded companies' ability to adapt to a quickly evolving internet.

It was put in place by the Obama Administration but President Trump chose to scrap the rule in December. The first would be protecting users from bias caused by internet providers, who would be able to offer faster services to companies that paid them more.

Even though net neutrality is dead, don't expect to see immediate changes, said Evan Greer, deputy director of Fight for the Future, a digital rights advocacy group. Led by its then-Democratic chairman, Tom Wheeler, the FCC approved rules that banned the blocking and slowing of Web content by Internet providers. Under the new guidelines, ISPs can block, throttle, or prioritize internet content as much as they like, as long as they clearly disclose to customers that that's what they're doing.

"That is not the open internet we know today and rely on to consume and create".

Net neutrality repeal - is it the end of the world? According to the National Council of State Legislatures, governors in six states - New Jersey, New York, Montana, Rhode Island, Vermont and Hawaii - have signed executive orders upholding net neutrality, and three - Washington, Vermont and OR - have enacted legislation that does so. FCC chairman Ajit Pai joins "CBS This Morning" to discuss why he thinks the rollback is "tremendously positive" for consumers.

For anyone who hasn't been following, net neutrality is the concept of treating all internet traffic the same, no matter where it originates from.

The Federal Communications Committee (FCC) was successful in repealing the net neutrality rules that the previous FCC leadership passed in 2015. There were some exceptions (emergency services, mostly), but for the most part, the rules made it illegal for ISPs to slow down (throttle) internet traffic based on content, so long as the data was legal.

The California state Senate passed a net neutrality bill on Wednesday.

There is also 5G internet being rolled out later this year that will bring new wireless home internet options. Lawsuits and "mass online actions" will slow the pace of any changes as companies will want to see how it all plays out.

"In the House, we'll need 218 lawmakers to sign on to a "discharge petition" in order to force a vote past leadership to the floor", the coalition's website outlines. As a result, the internet could become more like the TV networks, where you pay for different packages of internet services.

As Michael Cheah, general counsel at video site Vimeo, previously told CNNMoney: the point of the rules was "allowing consumers to pick the winners and losers and not [having] the cable companies make those decisions for them".

Washington and OR now have their own net neutrality laws, and a bill is pending in California's legislature.
