Cohen: Against Trump, Canada never had a chance

White House takes up fight against 'back-stabbing' Trudeau

The United States and Canada swung sharply towards a diplomatic and trade crisis on Sunday as top White House advisers lashed out at Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau a day after U.S. President Trump called him "very dishonest and weak".

The U.S. -Canada spat escalated when at a news conference, Trudeau said Canada would take retaliatory measures next month in response to Trump's decision to slap tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Canada, Mexico and the European Union.

Trump's threat comes after Trudeau defended Canada during the G7 summit in Quebec over the weekend, saying his country "will not be pushed around" in regards to the Trump administration's tariffs on steel and aluminum.

Theresa May drew roars of laughter from MPs after she was asked to chose between Canadian leader Justin Trudeau and US President Donald Trump.

The president said that Canada, Mexico and the European Union have taken advantage of an global trading system, benefiting from low US tariffs while imposing high trade barriers of their own.

In a rare show of unity, Opposition Members of Parliament are standing behind Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's promise to fight new tariffs from the United States.

According to the Office of the United States Trade Representative, the US had an $8.4 billion trade surplus with Canada, but a $17.5 billion trade deficit if services were excluded.

U.S. President Donald Trump speaks to the media as he leaves the G7 Summit in the Charlevoix town of La Malbaie, Quebec, Canada, June 9, 2018.

"We are polite and reasonable", Trudeau said, "but we also will not be pushed around".

Another stumbling block was the part regarding climate change, where the United States didn't want to see any reference to the Paris Agreement, from which the Trump administration has withdrawn, The Star reported.

"In conveying that message I used language that was inappropriate and basically lost the power of that message", Navarro said.

"According to a Canada release, they make nearly 100 Billion Dollars in Trade with USA (guess they were bragging and got caught!)".

The Canadian tariffs target $264 million in Minnesota products headed to Canada, adding $35 million to the cost of exports.

"It's kind of like ... if you were sitting with a friend and then out of the blue, you just punched them in the face", he said.

In state after state, especially those the president won in 2016 (think Louisiana, Tennessee, South Carolina and Texas), the voices rising are people who otherwise support the president, but have deep anxieties about where all of this is heading and what effect it will have on their lives and businesses.

Ries says that strong stance could help more Americans realize they don't want a trade war with Canada. And we were waiting for the document to come back so we could read it. "He did a great disservice to the whole G7", economic advisor Larry Kudlow said on CNN on Sunday.
