'Hostage situation' in Paris - man with 'BOMB and handgun' surrounded by armed police

A journalist for BFM Paris said two hostages had been taken.

An armed man is believed to have seized at least one hostage in Rue des Petites Ecuries, with armed police and firefighters at the scene.

The man was described as "determined and violent" by police, who surrounded the building where three hostages were being held on Tuesday. "The negotiator had difficulty understanding".

The Paris prosecutor's office detained the suspect, a 26-year-old man born in Morocco, a judicial official said.

He's holding two hostages.

The police said there was no indication that the incident was terrorism-related, but declined to elaborate on the hostage-taker's motive.

Iran's semi-official ISNA news agency reported that a spokesman for Iran's Foreign Ministry, Bahram Ghasemi, said the Iranian Embassy in Paris stood ready to help "considering the importance of people's lives and human aspects of the issue". He reportedly struck one man, who managed to escape, but was doused with gasoline.
