Briton Thomas takes Dauphine lead as Ireland's Martin wins stage

Team Sky's Geraint Thomas wrapped up arguably the biggest win of his road career on Sunday, claiming victory in the prestigious Criterium du Dauphine - traditionally seen as a good gauge of form ahead of July's Tour de France - on another bumper day for British cycling.

Thomas now holds an overall lead of one minute and 29 seconds in the general classification - with one stage remaining - ahead of England's Adam Yates (Mitchelton-Scott), who finished fifth on the day. "Romain Bardet was trying to overtake me in the GC but every time I responded".

Team Sky's Thomas suffered two punctures during the 136km stage from Moutiers to Saint-Gervais Mont Blanc, but took a wheel from a teammate on the second occasion and was paced back to the peloton by Michal Kwiatkowski and Dylan van Baarle.

"Ive been feeling good all year", the Irishman said after the race.

Ireland's Dan Martin resisted a late challenge from Welsh all-rounder Geraint Thomas to clinch his first win in 16 months after a thrilling summit duel at the Criterium de Dauphine on Friday.

"From the start of the year I said I wanted to get there [the Tour de France] in the best shape possible and I'm on course for that".

It gave them a 19 second lead over Team Sunweb and a 27 second advantage over Quick-Step Floors. We're getting closer and closer so I'm happy to get confidence from this race.
