Dustin Johnson back to world No 1 after St Jude victory

Dustin Johnson holes out for eagle at 18 trounces field at Fed Ex St Jude

SHOT OF THE DAY: Stewart Cink makes a hole-in-one on the par-3 eighth in a wonderful Saturday for him.

"I have high expectations going into every week", Johnson said when asked about the U.S. Open.

"It feels like it's been a long time (since my last win), even though it's only been six months".

Johnson, who started the day alongside Andrew Putnam at the top of the leaderboard, held his nerve to close with a four-under-par 66 at TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tennessee.

Sunday's victory was the 18th PGA Tour win of Johnson's career, and his first since a triumph at the Sentry Tournament of Champions in Hawaii in January. And Phil Mickelson picked up some momentum heading into the U.S. Open with a Sunday 65 and a T-12 finish.

The tournament win moves Johnson back into the world No. 1 ranking ahead of next week's U.S. Open, where he'll play with Justin Thomas.

Johnson birdied the third hole and bogeyed the fifth to make the turn at even par. Teeing off in the afternoon when the wind was stronger, Nordqvist closed her bogey-free round with a birdie on the par-5 ninth. "I've got a lot of control of my golf ball and that's what you're looking for going into any week, but yeah, especially going into [Sunday] and then obviously next week". "I've been swinging really well and have a lot of confidence in my game, and I played really well all week".

World number two Dustin Johnson shot a superb second round of 63 to take the halfway lead at the FedEx St Jude Classic on 10 under par.

Shanshan Feng, at No. 4 the top-ranked player in the field, shot 69.

Johnson put an exclamation point on his victory with a hole-out eagle from the fairway from 169 yards away on the closing hole, his second such hole out of the week.

"When you're around or in the lead you can definitely feel the pressure but I like it", Johnson, 33, said.

He's now won nine PGA Tour events since June 2016.

It appears on paper as a one-sided battle but tournament golf works in odd ways and Putnam is an emerging star with two victories on the Web.Com Tour prior to graduation to the bigger stage this year. 15, 16 and 17, but a hiccup at the last hole dropped him to 5 under.
