Former US ambassador to Canada Navarro comments'unconscionable

"Let me correct a mistake I made", White House economic advisor Peter Navarro was quoted as saying at a Washington event organized by The Wall Street Journal. "I own that, that was my mistake, those were my words".

Trudeau, who had said at the news conference that Canada would retaliate for new USA tariffs, didn't respond to questions about Trump when the prime minister arrived at a Quebec City hotel Sunday for meetings with other world leaders.

"I have instructed our U.S. Reps not to endorse the Communique as we look at Tariffs on automobiles flooding the U.S. Market!", Trump tweeted Saturday evening while en route to Singapore aboard Air Force One.

An angry Trump refused to sign a joint statement issued at the end of the summit, and he and his top aides assailed Trudeau, accusing him of dishonesty and betrayal.

Asked about Trump's tweets and the future of the G7 late Saturday during a photo op in La Malbaie, Trudeau declined to respond to several questions.

Freeland touted Canada's retaliatory measures several times as she referred to Trump's tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum as "illegal and unjustified" and disavowed "ad hominem attacks".

"Obviously we support the continuing efforts by the president on North Korea, we look forward to looking at the details of the agreement", Trudeau said Tuesday as he arrived on Parliament Hill for his weekly cabinet meeting.

Note that Navarro expressed regret only for the language, not the message, which is that Trudeau had better show President Trump more deference in the future.

"Canada is very clear", Freeland said.

"I'm very concerned about how personal the dispute has become between members of the White House staff - and even the President himself - and Justin Trudeau", Collins, R-Maine, told CNN.

"We have to stand up for our principles, our values in Europe, potentially with Canada or Japan", Germany Chancellor Angela Merkel said in an interview Sunday on ARD public TV.

The US president accused other states of "robbing" his country through their trade policies. He learned. That's going to cost a lot of money for the people of Canada.

A trade official from Mexico said Monday that the only way the countries renegotiating NAFTA will find a solution is through "sufficient flexibility" to narrow differences.

The US has slapped a 25% tariff on imports of steel and 10% on aluminium from countries including the United Kingdom and the rest of the European Union.

Noting the president said last week the most important part about his upcoming meeting with Kim Jong-un os "attitude", Heyman argued Trump "has had a really bad attitude with his partners and his allies".
