Edmonton, Toronto and Montreal were the three Canadian cities designated in the bid to possibly host games in the 2026 tournament, which is expanding to 48 team, up from the current 32-team format.
In a vote Wednesday at the FIFA Congress in Moscow, member associations voted in favour of the North American bid over that of Morocco.
The vote was conducted on the eve of the 2018 World Cup, which is scheduled to kick off Thursday in host nation Russian Federation. "Football today is the only victor". "We are all united in football", US Soccer president Carlos Cordeiro said.
"Thank you so, so very much for this incredible honor".
Three US territories - Guam, the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico - were among the other member nations to not vote.
The North American bid was in better shape to host the World Cup.
Of the 16 host cities, 10 will be in the United States while the remainder will be split evenly between Canada and Mexico. The U.S. will host 60 of the 80 matches, including the final, scheduled for MetLife Stadium outside New York City.
A day later, Portugal and Spain serve up one of the most intriguing early match-ups - with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, David Silva and Andres Iniesta all potentially in action at the Fisht Olympic Stadium.

Canada has never hosted a men's World Cup but held the women's tournament in 2015.
Officials have already talked of staging three games, one in each of the three countries, to kick off the tournament.
China is widely expected to bid to host a future World Cup, and is planning to build 70,000 soccer pitches by 2020.
Cordeiro has said his bid would generate $14b in revenue and make an $11b profit for Federation Internationale de Football Association.
The world has been waiting, and now we know North America will host the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Chief among those is US President Donald Trump, whose "America First" approach might score well with his electoral base but may have made the United bid's task harder than it could ever have imagined.
With Russia hosting in 2018 and Qatar in 2022, no countries from either Europe or Asia were allowed to bid for the 2026 tournament.

The ban was imposed after the company made false statements about disciplining some executives responsible for the violations. A separate monitor was appointed to a three-year term by a US federal court in Texas last year.

Helen Kalla, spokeswoman for the Nevada Democrats, said the party's strong early voting numbers show enthusiasm from its members. No one described reaching a consensus or plan, but still described the meeting as a productive exchange of ideas.
