Officials Linking Multi-State Salmonella Outbreak To Pre-Cut Melons

Salmonella outbreak linked to pre-cut melon

Officials said people reported contracting salmonella after eating pre-cut melon between April 30 and May 28. The following eight states were affected by the recall: Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina, and Ohio.

The CDC said that Kroger, Walmart, Payless and Jay C stores located in the affected areas have recalled their products which contained pre-cut melon from the market.

The CDC says there have been more hospitalizations with this outbreak than usual.

Salmonella is typically brief, with stomach cramps and diarrhea that can last anywhere from four to seven days.

Health officials are linking a multi-state salmonella outbreak to pre-cut melons, including those in fruit salads.

Six people have been reported sick in IL, 11 in in in, 32 in MI, 10 in Missouri, and one in Ohio.

Most people recover from a salmonella infection without treatment.

Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development supervisors say 32 people in Michigan have become ill because of the outbreak.

The Kroger Co. and Walmart are among grocery retailers that have removed fresh-cut melon products from their stores in connection with a multistate outbreak of salmonella.

According to the CDC and the FDA, Caito Foods, a food distributor based in Indianapolis, delivered salmonella-infected fruits packages such as pre-cut melons, mixed fruits packages, cantaloupe, and honeydew melon. Although the shelf life of the melon is limited, Kroger said, it issued the alert out of an abundance of caution. The products were sold in clear plastic containers.

Although the recall affects 10 states, so far, illnesses have been reported in only five. Young children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are more vulnerable to severe illness.

The investigation is ongoing to determine if products went to additional stores or states, the agencies said.
