President Trump Is Still Very Angry With Canada's PM Justin Trudeau

Peter Navarro sorry for saying there's a 'special place in hell' for Trudeau

Trump: Trudeau criticism will cost Canada `a lot of money´

"There's a special place in hell for any foreign leader that engages in bad-faith diplomacy with President Donald J. Trump and then tries to stab him in the back on the way out the door, and that's what bad-faith Justin Trudeau did with that stunt press conference", Navarro said.

"I have made it very clear to the president that it is not something we relish doing, but it is something that we absolutely will do, because Canadians, we're polite, we're reasonable, but we also will not be pushed around", Trudeau said.

"PM Justin Trudeau of Canada acted so meek and mild during our @G7 meetings only to give a news conference after I left saying that, "US Tariffs were kind of insulting" and he 'will not be pushed around, ' " Trump tweeted on Saturday.

The president's surrogates also piled on during Sunday U.S. news shows, with Trump trade adviser Peter Navarro saying there was "a special place in hell" for Trudeau. "In conveying that message I used language that was inappropriate".

The insults stemmed from a closing G7 press conference on Saturday in which Trudeau called USA steel and aluminum tariffs "insulting" and pledged to proceed with previously announced retaliatory tariffs. He called on Trudeau to apologise to Trump.

Canada has announced retaliatory tariffs on $16.6-billion worth of USA goods, from steel and aluminum to orange juice, pickles and bourbon. "I've been called worse things by better people", the elder Trudeau replied.

Trump, who had criticised Trudeau after the G7 meeting in Canada on the weekend, said the United States had a big trade deficit with Canada, and "a little balance" was needed.

Trudeau and his ministers were careful to say nothing that would add fuel to Trump's ire, hoping it will dissipate once the president is no longer stressed about his historic summit with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un. He's railed many times in recent days against Canadian import duties of 270 percent on dairy.

He said it "didn't look friendly" but it was "very friendly". "And it won't even be tough".

Although Trump has repeatedly insisted that US workers have lost out under the North American Free Trade Agreement, the US Trade Representative's office confirmed the trade surplus falls more than $8 billion in Washington's favor.

In New Hampshire, which counts Quebec as its largest trading partner and where almost a quarter of the population has French-Canadian roots, Tousignant doesn't believe a few undiplomatic words will do much to sour relations between "cousins".

The NAFTA talks have stalled since Trump last month imposed 25 per cent tariffs on steel from Canada, Mexico and the European Union, and 10 per cent tariffs on aluminum.

And he confirmed that Canada would press ahead with dollar-for-dollar retaliatory tariffs on July 1 as previously announced.

"We've got to look at what supports are available to ensure that if their jobs, their livelihoods are compromised, what can the government do to support these folks".
