Pompeo admits implementing North Korean deal will not be easy

Trump returns salute of North Korean general

US Secretary of State to Visit China, Talk about Trump-Kim Summit

Pompeo, the former Central Intelligence Agency director, then plans to fly to Beijing to update the Chinese government.

"We are going to get out of the war games that cost so much money", he said referring to the USA participation in joint military exercises with South Korea.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has reaffirmed the U.S.'s "iron-clad" commitment to its alliance with Japan and South Korea and said that sanctions on North Korea will not be lifted until its complete denuclearization is realized.

Pompeo, who flew to Seoul to brief South Korean leaders, said the brief, four-point joint statement that emerged from the summit did not encapsulate all the progress the USA and North Korea had made.

At Thursday's joint press conference, South Korea's Foreign Minister told reporters that she and Pompeo had not discussed the drills "in depth" but "military officials from South Korea and the United States will have to discuss further and coordinate".

"We have big teams ready to go", including experts from the USA and other partners around the world, Pompeo said. Pompeo said Kim understands that "there will be in-depth verification" in any deal with the U.S. What if America suffers buyer's remorse and the president (or perhaps the next president) reneges, and Kim finds that he is as vulnerable as was Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi, whose fate national security adviser John Bolton has made clear he would happily assign to the North Korean leader?

"Our understanding is that what President Trump said after his deep consultation with Chairman Kim Jong-un is aimed at strengthening the budding dialogue momentum between South and North Korea", said Kang, the South Korean foreign minister. There is no longer a Nuclear Threat from North Korea. He toughened up worldwide sanctions to further isolate North Korea and then agreed to meet directly with Kim after South Korea's president convinced him that the North was committed to giving up its nuclear weapons.

Al Jazeera's Wayne Hay, reporting from Seoul, said that the meeting was an opportunity for the three countries "to show that they are in the same page" when it comes to the issue of North Korea and denuclearisation. That kind of thing is very threatening to North Korea.

The U.S. and South Korea hold major joint exercises every spring and summer in South Korea. "But as an example, if Vladimir Putin were sitting next to me at a table instead of one of the others, and we were having dinner the other night in Canada, I could say 'Would you do me a favor?"

Trump is also wrong to say there was an assumption before he took office that the United States would go to war. On its face, it was not President Trump.

"The U.S. has stationed combat troops in South Korea since the end of the Korean War in the 1950s and has used them in a variety of drills".

"Given that they were able to sign this agreement, it will prove that USA remains to be a superpower and also this will give them the right, more leverage on how they will engage with North Korea diplomatically or economically", he said.

North Korea still has nuclear weapons.

He is known to have stopped over at airbases in Guam and Hawaii to encourage US forces and is expected to arrive at the White House sometime Wednesday morning.

"We envision strong, secure and prosperous North Korea that is fully integrated into the community of nations".

After calling the dictator a "tough guy", "smart", and someone who "loves his people", Trump shrugged off a question about his human rights abuses, echoing his remark a year ago that while Russian president Vladimir Putin is a killer, "There are a lot of killers".

Japan has reacted to Trump's plan to cancel military exercises with South Korea with concern, saying the drills were vital for east Asian security. -South Korean exercises appeared off-limits under the new guidance.

Trump and Kim wrote of a new future for the world in their joint statement, but that new future may be one ruled from Beijing, not Washington. He said he planned to continue sharing the view with Washington and Seoul.
