Child in Idaho Has Plague

Elmore County child recovering from plague

Idaho child diagnosed with plague

The health department reminds southern Idaho recreationists that plague is risky to people and pets and for people to be aware of what to look for when in the Idaho outdoors.

While the child was not identified to the public, authorities say that he is from Elmore County and now back home in recovery after being hospitalized for treatment with antibiotics.

Evidently. It's unknown whether the child - whose identity was not disclosed - contracted the disease in Idaho or in or while on a recent vacation.

Having evolved to live inside rodents, Yersinia pestis is primarily transmitted to new hosts - including us humans - via flea bites.

The Central District Health Department stated that the child from Elmore County is now on antibiotics and recovering. Eight cases of plague have occurred in OR since 1990 and two in Idaho.

It is infamous for killing millions of people in Europe centuries ago.

It is believed that the boy was diagnosed late last month and lab results confirmed that he had the bubonic plague, which affects the lymph nodes rather than the deadly pneumonic plague which affects the lungs. But this year, for the first time in decades, Idaho has reported a case of the disease in humans. People can decrease their risk by treating their pets for fleas and avoiding contact with wildlife. "Wear insect repellant, long trousers and socks when visiting plague-affected areas". Therefore, the majority of plague cases occur in rural areas, especially in rural West and Southwest.

Additionally, the CDHD recommends keeping your pets and their food away from any potentially infected creatures, and always use appropriate flea control products to reduce their risk of infection. Flea bites spread bubonic or septicemic plague, which both cause fever and weakness. No one should feed rodents in parks and picnic or campground areas, and people should never handle sick or dead rodents.

The CDC urges people to respond quickly to any rat or mouse infestations in your home, to wear gloves when dealing with animals that could carry it and to keep fleas off your pets.

The bubonic plague is the most common form of plague and is characterized by painful swollen lymph nodes.

Rapidly developing pneumonia with shortness of breath, chest pain, cough, bloody or watery mucous.
