SpaceX launch live stream: How to watch the NASA-ISS cargo mission blast off online

AI project lead of CIMON speaks with CIMON a mobile astronaut robot which is able to listen understand and respond in natural language with humans

In a medical emergency, no one will want to wait 20 minutes for a call for help to reach Earth and then another 20 minutes for advice to get back to the stricken crew, said NASA's space station program manager Kirk Shireman.

Philipp Schulien, an engineer for CIMON's hardware contractor, Airbus, said extending astronauts' abilities in space is imperative for future space exploration journeys, like the crewed missions to Mars that are scheduled to take off as early as 2020. Measuring 32cm across and tipping the scales at 5kg, it's essentially astronauts' flight attendant and assistance system.

CIMON will deploy a range of IBM Watson artificial intelligence, including computer vision and various forms of natural language processing.

"Ideally, the astronauts could use their time better and more effectively". This is the shortest change time required for the Falcon 9 rocket so far.

Airbus established CIMON for Germany's National Space Agency, and the objective is to understand if intellectual bots can collaborate with astronauts to make working life simple in space.

The group project developed and integrated artificial intelligence (AI) components into CIMON and have been training it to demonstrate a personality.

The robot is supposed to assist the astronauts in their experiments. "Thanks to this fully voice-controlled access to documents and media, the astronaut can conveniently navigate through operating and fix instructions and procedures for experiments and equipment". It is tuned to recognize ISS commander Gerst's face and his voice.

Dragon lifted off on a Falcon 9 rocket from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida with more than 5,900 pounds of research, equipment, cargo and supplies that will support dozens of investigations aboard the space station.

Dragon will fly with almost 6,000 pounds of cargo, supplies and science experiments as part of the 15th of 20 missions under a contract between SpaceX and NASA's Commercial Resupply Services program, also known as CRS-15.

NASA astronauts Ricky Arnold and Drew Feustel will use the space station's Canadarm2 robotic arm to capture Dragon when it arrives at the station on Monday, July 2.
