Samsung phone bug secretly shares your photos with rando contacts

Someone looking at their smartphone shocked

Users on Reddit and Samsung's forums have reported that their photos are being sent to random contacts over the Samsung Messages app, and no record of the images being sent is shown. According to posts on Reddit and Samsung's official support boards first spotted by Gizmodo, the devices affected include the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 8. One user has even claimed that Samsung Messages sent all of the photos in their gallery to one contact late at night for no apparent reason. "My phone's battery was super low overnight so maximum power saving had kicked in from a routine I set with Good Lock, and two or three people had been sent photos (just one each, and they were photos I had sent them in the past)".

One user said that his Galaxy smartphone sent ALL of his photos to his girlfriend. How and when that happens, is still unclear, but it is not limited to a specific carrier, as customers of both T-Mobile and AT&T have experienced this new "feature". Errors included scheduled text messages ending up in the wrong threads.

Samsung said in a forum post that it was aware of the issue. On Samsung's Galaxy S9 support board, a user said Samsung Messages became buggy after an T-Mobile RCS/advanced messaging update on his phone.

Samsung acknowledged an inquiry from Gizmodo that it was aware of the bug and that it is now working on a fix.

Samsung says it is investigating the issue, which may be caused by an update to the texting app Samsung Messages.

As you can probably imagine, many are concerned about this issue as having your photos sent to a random contact puts your privacy at risk.

There are now two fixes if you are anxious about the issue affecting your device.

Some users have recommended changing the phones' default SMS service to avoid being caught out by the bug, using Android Messages instead, and revoking Samsung Messages' permission to access media.
