Serena Williams speaks out on Roger Federer's decision to leave Nike

10 years on Nadal admits Wimbledon 2008 final against Federer ‘created a big impact’ on his career

Eight-time Wimbledon champion Roger Federer has worn the Nike swoosh for the best part of a decade but before his first-round match at the All-England Club, Federer sported some new threads.

Roger Federer's career-long association with Nike appeared to be over on Monday (July 2) as the Wimbledon champion walked on to Centre Court to open the defence of his men's singles title wearing a Uniqlo branded outfit. For the moment, as fast at retailing as they are, as great as they are, it just needs a bit of time.' Uniqlo doesn't produce tennis shoes, so another brand will be needed for Federer.

The deal reportedly gives Federer the right to sell additional sponsorship patches on his shirt, something Nike didn't allow him to do.

But it was only delaying the inevitable as Federer, embarking on his 20th Wimbledon campaign, finished off surely one of his shortest matches with a 6-1 6-3 6-4 victory taking just one hour and 19 minutes. Nike also still owns the "RF" logo.

It was the absence of the RF logo, though, that concerned fans. Uniqlo does not now make tennis footwear.

The star athlete added that the partnership had "been a long time coming".

Roger Federer left Nike after 24 years and unveiled his new endorsement deal at Wimbledon. "But like Uniqlo, I also have a great love for life, culture and humanity", Federer said. The good thing is it's not theirs forever.

Federer retained his Nike shoes, as Uniqlo do not now manufacture tennis footwear.

Sports news site ESPN reported the price tag of Federer's new deal, but Uniqlo has not shared the specific terms. Perhaps most importantly, the deal also features a clause that says he will continue to be paid even if he doesn't play.

The Swiss Maestro faces a potential banana skin in the opening round in the form of Dusan Lajovic, who he defeated a year ago in the second round.
