Here's What Hurricane Beryl Looks Like From Space
06 July 2018, 09:29 | Dale Webster
Tropical Storm Beryl could become hurricane on Friday
Beryl is the second named storm of the 2018 hurricane season. Beryl is moving Westward to West-northward towards the Caribbean island chain. Wind shear is expected to increase around the storm over the weekend into early next week. Forecasters say the storm will likely maintain its hurricane status as it approaches and crosses the islands.
Beryl is forecast to remain a hurricane as it passes south of Puerto Rico and not dissipate until it is located south of Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
Beryl is a very compact hurricane with hurricane-force winds that extend outward up to 10 miles (20 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 35 miles (55 km). Beryl is forecast to weaken as it moves into the Caribbean.
Maximum sustained winds estimated for Hurricane Beryl is about 75 miles per hour and hurricane force winds are limited to 10 miles northeast of the centre, the DDM said.
"It is possible that we could have hurricane watches up for some of those islands by tonight", said Robbie Berg, a hurricane specialist at the National Hurricane Center. However, it is expected to gain speed on Friday before downgrading late Saturday to a tropical storm or a strong trough by late Sunday or Monday. Forecasters said there's a greater-than-usual uncertainty in the analysis of the storm's current intensity and in the forecasted intensity. Initially forecasters anticipated a slightly above average Atlantic hurricane season, but no repeat of the 2017 season which was one of the most active and destructive this century.
It dumped heavy rain on the southeastern United States.
