Joey Chestnut sat outside the Nathan's Hot Dog building on Coney Island hoping to find the slightest bit of shade to compose himself. 11-time victor Joey "Jaws" Chestnut broke his own record and took home the Mustard Belt by eating 74 hot dogs in 10 minutes. But despite how Chestnut finishes Wednesday's competition, his record is expected to remain intact, with heavy -220 odds favoring the victor to consume UNDER 72.5 hot dogs and buns.

Chestnut consumed 64 hot dogs in 10 minutes Wednesday.

"Oh my God, I got in a vicious rhythm", a sweaty Chestnut said. "I was feeling good today".

Rich Shea, the president of Major League Eating, which puts on the contest, said the mistake might warrant changes for future counting procedures.

Sudo is a four-time victor herself, and a year ago she broke 40 hot dogs for the first time at the event, eating 41. He went on to win every year until 2015, when he was defeated by Stonie, who ate 62 hot dogs to Chestnut's 60. It will also be interesting to see if Chestnut can break the record he set a year ago when he ate an astounding 72 hot dogs - buns included - in just 10 minutes. "Like, 'We will celebrate whatever we want.' And in this case, we choose a hot dog contest", Shea said. While that was short of the 41 she pounded down in 2017, she easily got the best of second-place finisher Michelle Lesco, who ate 28 frankfurters.

Interest in the competition has grown in recent years thanks in large part to the rivalry of star eaters like Chestnut.

Washington, D.C.'s, record hot dog eater Juliet Lee shared her secret to competitive eating ahead of the Fourth of July holiday.

The Nathan's hot dog eating contest is held on the Fourth of July at the original Nathan's Hot Dog location at the corner of Surf and Stillwell avenues in Coney Island and has become one of New York's annual July 4th traditions.
