Pruitt aides reveal new details of his controversial spending and management at EPA

Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt is the latest high-profile casualty of President Donald Trump's administration, after he resigned his role amid a swirling ethics scandal.

"Scott Pruitt did great work to reduce the regulatory burdens facing our nation while leading the Environmental Protection Agency", said Republican Senator Jim Inhofe, from Pruitt's home state of Oklahoma.

"Within the Agency Scott has done an outstanding job, and I will always be thankful to him for this", added Trump. And he asked aides to help his wife get a job, including seeking a meeting with an executive at Chick-fil-A, and to run personal errands for him, like tracking down a favorite lotion and trying to buy a used mattress from the Trump International Hotel in Washington.

The praise for Pruitt was far from universal. As Oklahoma's former attorney general, he waged a legal fight against the environmental rules implemented by the agency he eventually would head.

Pruitt was also under fire for frequent first-class air travel and for purchasing costly items for his office, including a soundproof telephone booth.

Pruitt's EPA backed a plan to stop requiring auto manufacturers to make their cars more fuel efficient.

Wheeler's connection to the coal industry is strong. Former aide Kevin Chmielewski told CNN that Pruitt and his staff kept "secret" calendars and schedules to hide controversial contacts with industry representatives and The Washington Post and The New York Times revealed aspects of testimony Pruitt aides gave to Congress about the EPA administrator enlisted them for personal errands.

"[Wheeler] will be similar to Pruitt in terms of the agenda - he understands the Trump administration and will carry out the agenda", Matthew Dempsey, a former colleague of Wheeler's who works with an energy lobbying firm told the Times.

"This man is directly and significantly harming my child's - and every child's - health and future with decisions to roll back environmental regulations for the benefit of big corporations", Kink wrote.

The inspector general said it also would look into whether employees who attempted to raise red flags about Pruitt's spending were sidelined or demoted.

"Instead of protecting our environment and combating climate change, he has worked to protect the interests of the fossil fuel industry and polluters all over the country", Sen.

In an interview Thursday with Elaine Quijano on CBSN's "Red & Blue" after his resignation, Mink said she's "glad he took the hint".

"Scott Pruitt was the worst EPA administrator in the history of the agency".

Pruitt faced harsh criticisms from House lawmakers over them during April appearances before Congressional committees, where he discussed the EPA's budget. Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price was sacked a year ago after it was disclosed he took costly charter flights instead of commercial planes.

Pruitt's EPA proposed plans to eliminate programs created to protect children from lead paint.
