Trump's Supreme Court Nomination to Preempt TV Programming

Prominent Indian-American judge Amul Thapar has failed to make it to the shortlist, of the three candidates, from which U.S. President Donald Trump would pick his replacement for Justice Anthony Kennedy, a media report said on Saturday.

"I think in regards to Kethledge and Tom Hardiman they are a little less known by conservatives and their records are a little bit lighter so it might take some time", Leo told ABC's "This Week" on Sunday.

While the U.S. Senate once required a 60-vote supermajority to overcome blocking tactics against Supreme Court nominees, the Republican majority changed the rules previous year during the debate on Justice Neil Gorsuch.

The only problem is, he hasn't announced his nominee yet. Just days after his inauguration in January 2017 he nominated the conservative justice Neil Gorsuch to the court.

The president's only public statement about the choice confronting him came in a tweet from his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, where he was spending the weekend.

"We're going to do it at 9 pm in the White House", he said.

But Trump himself has said he wants to put people on the court who support overturning the landmark 1973 decision that granted women the constitutional right to have an abortion. A Republican appointee, he has held the key vote on such high-profile issues as abortion, affirmative action, gay rights, guns, campaign finance and voting rights.

McConnell has spoken to Trump or McGahn, or both, every day since Kennedy announced June 27 that he was retiring from the court. "I've argued cases before the Supreme Court", Blumenthal said on "This Week". He has counseled them that there is no margin of error because the timing of the Senate's court vote is so close to an election that could hand control of the chamber to Democrats.

Leading Republican US senators also toured Sunday TV studios predicting that their party would stand united over the confirmation process, and warning Democratic senators from conservative "red" states won by Trump in 2016 that if they opposed the nomination they would have to answer to voters at the midterm elections in November.

The appointment is seen as crucial because Kennedy was often a swing vote who would sometimes side with the court's four conservative justices and at other times with its liberals.
