Croatia defeat Russia 4-3 on penalties to reach 2018 World Cup semifinal

Russia's fairytale run at the 2018 World Cup has finally ended after they were beaten 4-3 on penalties by Croatia in the last quarter final match on Saturday.

Fyodor Smolov saw Russia's first penalty saved by Danijel Subasic and, although Russian Federation goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev saved a Mateo Kovacic kick, the hosts' fate was sealed when Mario Fernandes fired completely wide from their third attempt.

He added that he did not see consistency in Croatia's game as they "looked good for three games but played worse against Denmark".

Full Time: Russia 1 vs Croatia 2 - Kramaric cancelled out Cheryshev's opener in the first half and there were no goals in the second half. "Of course, I am rooting for Croatia and want Team Croatia to advance".

Croatia goalkeeper Danijel Subasic, already hobbled with a leg injury, could do nothing but watch it hit the net.

That Croatia side hammered Germany 3-0 to reach the semis in France, and Dalic is looking for a similar result on Saturday.

Luka Modric won the man of the match award for the third time in five games at this World Cup, with a superb array of passing from a deep role in midfield.

In the last 16 Croatia had beaten Denmark on spot kicks and Russian Federation beat Spain by the same method.

Akinfeev levelled things up at 1-1 when he dived the right way to keep out Kovacic after two penalties each.

Ivan Rakitic had a chance to open the scoring for the Croats in the 15th minute with a free-kick on the edge of the box but his strike sailed over the crossbar.

Then in 1990 in Italy they beat Cameroon in extra time to head into another semi-final, this time they faced Germany and lost on penalties, the beginning of their long hoodoo from 12 yards.
