The Caribbean should see fewer storms, and the chance of a major hurricane hitting the region is significantly less than it was when the 2018 Atlantic hurricane season began.

The year's first Atlantic hurricane weakened Saturday morning into a tropical storm, but Caribbean islands struck by last year's devastating hurricanes are still on alert.

A tropical depression is a low-pressure system with thunderstorms that produce maximum winds of about 39 miles per hour.

The National Hurricane Center said the depression could become a tropical storm later on Thursday or Friday. Weakening is expected once Beryl reaches the eastern Caribbean Sea on Monday, but the system may not degenerate into an open trough until it reaches the vicinity of Hispaniola and the central Caribbean Sea. Storm force winds extend just 35 miles from Beryl's center. A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for Barbados, St. Lucia, Martinique, St. Martin, and St. Barthelemy, Saba and St. Eustatius and St. Maarten. This disturbance is forecast to move westward or west-northwestward at 15 to 20 miles per hour over the tropical Atlantic Ocean.

"Beryl has been a bit of a surprise today", forecasters noted, explaining that small storms can be tricky and change rapidly.

The intensification trend is not expected to persist, as very dry air, faster upper winds, and marginally warm ocean temperatures will likely cause Beryl to degrade into a weaker tropical low.

Dominica, which was devastated by Hurricane Maria in September 2017 and is still recovering from that Category 5 storm, had been under a hurricane watch since Friday when Beryl became a hurricane.

Fortunately, even if it's deemed a tropical depression, it doesn't have much of a future.

No watches or warnings for that storm have been issued.

Hurricane Beryl, a compact storm almost 2,000 miles from North Carolina, is not expected to have any impact on the Southeast coast.

In the Tropics early on this 4th of July, there is some activity we're watching on both sides of the Lower 48.
