A passenger with hundreds on board has come off the rails in northwest Turkey killing 10 people and injuring scores of others.

Turkey's official Anadolu news agency said two engineers were called in for questioning at the prosecutor's office.

Ten people were killed and 73 were injured in a train accident in northwest Turkey on Sunday, television channels quoted the health ministry undersecretary as saying.

The train was heading to Istanbul from Edirne, on the border with Greece, bound for Istanbul with 362 passengers and six crew members, the transportation ministry said.

Television pictures showed several train carriages sprawled on their sides, and shocked injured passengers being taken away on stretchers as rescue workers picked through the wreckage.

The exact cause of the crash is unclear but authorities have blamed bad weather and a landslide for the accident.

"A suburban train had an accident. due to a landfall".

According to reports, the train was travelling from Uzunkopru to Instanbul and came off the rails in the Tekirdag Corlu district.

The Turkish army said in a statement that it had sent helicopters to the scene.

Turkish President Erdogan said he was briefed on the matter, saying, "The accident is being investigated from every angle", Anadolu reported.

The train involved in Sunday's accident appears to have been a slower train on a single track railway.

The Ministry of Transport said five of the train's six cars derailed in a village in Tekirdag province after "the ground between the culvert and the rail collapsed" due to heavy rain.
