Williams is in contention for her eighth Wimbledon title, which is five more major titles than the other 15 players left in the tournament on the women's side have in their careers.

Djokovic would be the bigger threat to Nadal since the Serbian is 26-25 versus the Spaniard, but the two have only played three times on grass, with the latest meeting coming in the 2011 Wimbledon final.

Federer is having no such problems and eased past Jan-Lennard Struff 6-3 7-5 6-2.

Darkness descended at just the right time as the German came back to win 6-4 5-7 6-7 (0/7) 6-1 6-2, justifying his eventual decision to not withdraw.

German fourth seed Alexander Zverev made the third round, seeing off Taylor Fritz of the United States 6-4, 5-7, 6-7 (0/7), 6-1, 6-2 and faces Latvian qualifier Ernests Gulbis for a spot in the last 16.

"Just ran out of time in the end, " Venus said. Williams will follow Federer at Centre Court, and she plays 120th-ranked qualifier Evgeniya Rodina of Russian Federation. "You have to win the last point, and I didn't succeed in that today".

A series of unexpected results have seen Garbine Muguruza, Maria Sharapova, Simona Halep, Petra Kvitova, Venus Williams and Caroline Wozniacki all eliminated.

The status quo has been challenged like never before in the women's singles, with nine of the top 10 seeds crashing out before the Wimbledon last 16 for the first time in the Open area.

The top seeds in the men's draw may have fared better than the women in the first week of Wimbledon. The 19-year-old has improved his strength and is noticeably bigger since his first Grand Slam appearance as a wildcard at the 2017 Australian Open, where he lost to American Sam Querrey in round 2. Her own daughter, Anna, is six years old and travels with her on Tour - as does little Olympia with Williams, although the heat might keep her off Centre Court on Monday.

"Serena is my idol, " Rodina said.

"Regardless of how many matches I've played at Wimbledon, and especially on Centre Court, it is such a wonderful feeling playing out there".

Keys also came up short with a comeback attempt after fighting back from a set and two breaks down, losing 7-5, 5-7, 6-4. He would also have been grateful for the extra day's rest after a marathon five-set victory over Russia's Daniil Medvedev which took more than three hours to complete.

Ninth-seeded John Isner of the USA reached the fourth round for the first time, beating 98th-ranked Radu Albot of Moldova 6-3, 6-3, 6-4.

Fourth-seeded Alexander Zverev reached the third round in the men's event by beating Taylor Fritz of the USA 6-4, 5-7, 6-7 (0), 6-1, 6-2 in a match that was suspended a day earlier after the third set.

South Africa's Kevin Anderson, seeded eight, swept past Germany's Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-3, 7-5, 7-5 on the back of 22 aces and 42 winners.
