The RFEF's executive committee met on Monday and unanimously approved Luis Enrique's appointment just eight days after the national team, under caretaker manager Fernando Hierro, were eliminated on penalties by hosts Russian Federation in the second round of the World Cup.

Lopetegui had been appointed as new Real Madrid manager and was destined to take over after the tournament in Russian Federation but RFEF president Luis Rubiales was not happy with Lopetegui not informing him about his decision.

Lopetegui was named as Zinedine Zidane's successor at Real Madrid, with the Spanish Football Federation angered by the timing of the announcement with the World Cup just around the corner.

Fernando Hierro was given the job on a caretaker basis, to at least initially see Spain through this summer's World Cup.

Draws against Portugal and Iran in between a narrow victory over Iran were followed by elimination at the hands of Russian Federation in the last 16.

Hierro declined to return to his previous job as the federation's technical director and "will undertake new professional challenges", the federation wrote.

Luis Enrique is favourite to take over as Spain manager.

Fernando Hierro has stepped down as Spain's interim head coach following their early exit from the World Cup.

Hierro, 50, has made a decision to "seek new horizons", according to the Spanish football federation (RFEF).

The former World Cup winners in 2010 played out a 3-3 draw with Portugal during his debut match claimed a narrow 1-0 win over Iran before battling Morocco to a 2-2 draw.

Remembering a world before the World Cup started is proving very hard now that we're in this utopia of brilliant football and weather so incredible that even in Manchester I've forgotten what rain looks like.
