Trump's Supreme Court justice pick: Names of 6 candidates interviewed by president

Report President Trump Has Made His Decision on a Supreme Court Nominee

President Trump's Supreme Court shortlist has reportedly been whittled down to three contenders ahead of a Monday night announcement on a nominee to succeed retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy.

Noting this nomination will be a "defining moment" for Trump's legacy, Cruz is urging the president to avoid the mistakes of past Republican presidents.

"This is a major vulnerability for Heitkamp, Donnelly, and Manchin. but also for people like Bob Casey [a Democrat from Pennsylvania] who calls himself pro-life, Claire McCaskill, and other vulnerable Democrats in states that Trump won overwhelmingly", says Ms. Quigley.

LAT: Judge Brett Kavanaugh is an extremely well credentialed, highly regarded judge on the D.C. Circuit, which is really the second most important and influential court in the country after the Supreme Court.

President Trump has spent most of this week interviewing candidates for the SCOTUS nomination. A common thread with all three is that their states are very much aligned with the Trump administration on policy. The "person that is chosen will be outstanding".

Trump won Manchin's home state of West Virginia by more than 42 points in 2016, putting the longtime moderate Democrat on thin ice going into this November. During his campaign, he promised that if he were able to change the composition of the court, it would "automatically" lead to the overturning of Roe v. Wade, the seminal case recognizing the constitutional right to abortion.

The remarks by liberal leaders at Thursday's news conference are aimed at raising pressure on senators, including Republicans Susan Collins of ME and Alaska's Lisa Murkowski, who've backed abortion rights.

Citing unnamed sources, Fox News said the president has met with the six candidates, with some being interviewed a few times. He is a graduate of the University of MI, where he received both his Bachelor of Arts and Juris Doctorate degrees.

Some conservatives have pointed to Kethledge as a potential justice in the mold of Neil Gorsuch, Trump's first Supreme Court nominee a year ago. Kethledge upheld rapist and murderer Marvin Gabrion's death penalty which Gabrion's lawyers sought to overturn in part based on Michigan's lack of a death penalty.

But while she has said that some cases like Roe v. Wade need not stand as precedents if a future court deems it to be wrongly decided, she has generally suggested that Roe v. Wade is in fact settled law.

As Trump's list tightened, there was some internal concern that the president's options could be narrowed by the public outcry - particularly what had appeared to be mounting conservative reservations about Kavanaugh. "We'll announce it on Monday". "They've just gone through the committee in the previous year and a half", one aide says.

President Donald Trump is confident he will grab the nation's attention with his Supreme Court show.

Once the selection is announced, of course, the race will be on to get the nominee confirmed as soon as possible.

He will tap a conservative judge to rally Republican voters in a midterm election year.

Raymond Kethledge, a former Kennedy law clerk and appeals court judge from MI, is thought to be a leading contender.

Collins' office did not immediately respond to questions from the Bangor Daily News, but she has been a target of progressive groups in the fight over Kennedy's replacement over the past week. This would put a debate and confirmation vote somewhere in the middle of September.

"I want them to hold the line and I don't want them to cave", said Wong.
