200+ Cases Of Infections Following Parasites In Del Monte Vegetables — CDC

CDC Reports 212 Confirmed Cases of Cyclospora in Midwest
As it turns out, Lund is one of the reported 56 people in the state who fell sick with a Cyclospora infection, an intestinal parasite he got after eating Fresh Del Monte Produce vegetable trays he picked up at a nearby Kwik Trip.
Osterholm said he suspected the actual number of cases was much higher than the 212 confirmed so far by health officials.
The FDA is now investigating the outbreak of cyclosporiasis, related to the Del Monte products. Cyclosporiasis, an intestinal illness, can lead to diarrhea, loss of appetite, weight loss, stomach cramps/pain, bloating, increased gas, nausea, and fatigue, according to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration. Therefore, it is unlikely that cyclosporiasis is passed directly from one person to another. Some people who are infected with Cyclospora do not have any symptoms. The company is also recalling "small veggie trays" which are 28-ounces and were distributed in IL and Indiana. Other symptoms may include vomiting, body aches, headache, fever and other flu-like symptoms.
Del Monte, a Florida-based company, issued then a voluntary recall for all 6-oz. and 12-oz. trays containing carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, celery and dill dip.
If left untreated, the illness may last anywhere from a few days to a month, or longer.
The pre-packaged vegetables were sold in "clear, plastic clamshell containers" and were sold at Kwik Trip, Kwik Star, Demond's, Sentry, Potash, Meehan's, Country Market, FoodMax, and Peapod. Still, no matter where you live, if you have their veggies in your fridge with a sell by date of June 17, do yourself a favor and compost it ASAP.
FDA has not identified which of the ingredients is the vehicle for this outbreak; each component of these vegetable trays is under consideration. The agency recommends throwing out all recalled products.
