3rd mission underway at Thai cave, aims to rescue all left

Will Elon Musk’s ‘kid submarine’ be used in Thai rescue?

Thai cave rescue operation saves four, just as Elon Musk preps mini submarine made from Falcon tube

Elon Musk says he has visited the flooded cave in northern Thailand where a youth soccer team became trapped and has left a mini-submarine there for future use, but it seems the rescue team may not be able to put it to use.

Four were rescued over the weekend. Eastern time the prior night.

For the five still stranded, it's been 17 days since they've been outside.

The head of Thailand's Health Department said doctors at the Chiang Rai Prachanukroh Hospital are applying treatments and putting the boys who have been rescued through a battery of tests to determine their conditions to help them recover from the nightmarish ordeal of being marooned in the Tham Luang Nang Non cave. They were found alive last week by divers.

"Our job is not completely done", Osottanakorn said.

On Friday, the death of a former Thai navy SEAL underscored the risks. Jesada said they were uncertain what type of infections the boys could face "because we have never experienced this kind of issue from a deep cave".

Though it rained again Sunday, it did not affect the water levels in the cave, said Narongsak Osatanakorn, the leader of the command center in charge of the rescue operation.

Authorities have repeatedly said the rain could re-flood crucial parts of the cave complex that have been drained and make the escape route much harder or even impossible to navigate.

The first four boys had already met their families through windows. Narongsak said experts told him the new rain could shrink the unflooded space where the boys are sheltering to 108 square feet.

"The weather conditions and other environments today are as good as yesterday".

Since it is rainy season, you can expect nearly everyday you will get some type of rain. Efforts to pump water out of the cave have been set back by heavy downpours. Officials have also been continuously pumping water out the cave.

At some point, there was talk of leaving of the boys in the cave throughout the rainy season, Tracy said.

A total of eight boys have now been rescued.

Musk has offered a "kid-sized" submarine, named Wild Boar after the kids' soccer team, to help in the rescue operation. The boys will be hospitalized for at least a week. "They can have normal food but we are making sure it is easily digestible, not spicy or too strongly flavoured".

The second rescue attempt is believed to have started at 11am local time on Monday. Each operation has taken at least nine hours.

"I insist that all 13 will be safe and sound", Chiang Rai provincial Gov. Narongsak Osatanakorn said at a news conference on Monday.

A massive worldwide effort involving more than 100 divers and rescue workers brought the first eight boys out through winding and partly-submerged passageways on Sunday and Monday, four a day. He had said fresh air tanks needed to be laid along the underwater route.

The names of the rescued boys have not been released out of "respect for those families whose sons are still trapped inside", the mission chief said. The boys could be quarantined for up to 48 hours.

How will the kids' mental health be effected?

Dr Jessada said their initially low temperatures might result from the boys having been trapped without food and in a damp area, and having dived for long periods on their way out.
