Taiwan Presses U.S. Airlines to Stand Up to Beijing on One China Policy

Prodded by Beijing Air India joins others Taiwan is now Chinese Taipei

India's national carrier Air India has fallen in line with China's demand not to refer to Taiwan as a separate country but as Chinese Taipei, which is how Beijing wants it to be known officially.

The foreign ministry justified its advice to Air India to change the name of Taiwan as being consistent with global norms and Indian policy. Air India operates a code-share flight to Taiwan with Air China.

"There was a mail to the regional manager in Hong Kong from China Registry, MEA, Government of India, wherein they have approved the nomenclatures to be used by Air India on its website in respect of Hong Kong SAR (Special Administrative Region) of China, Macau SAR of China and Chinese Taipei", the Air India spokesperson was quoted as saying. This is the reason that this destination is listed on the Air India website.

As of Wednesday, Taiwan was referred to as "Chinese Taipei" on the drop-down booking list on Air India's website.

TECC Representative Ambassador Chung Kwang Tien calls on Air India to stand up against the unreasonable demand from the government of People's Republic of China and promptly restore the name of "Taiwan" on its official website.

Under its "One China" policy, Beijing considers Taiwan a province and opposes ties between Taipei and other capitals.

Air India has caved to China's attempts to strong-arm countries and companies into recognising Taiwan as a part of "One China". These airlines were sent a warning letter send from The Civil Aviation Authority Of China on April 25, 2018.

HKFP has contacted Air India for comment.

Flags of Taiwan and U.S. are placed for a meeting between U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ed Royce speaks and with Su Chia-chyuan, President of the Legislative Yuan in Taipei, Taiwan March 27, 2018. A year earlier, a parliamentary delegation from India had visited Taiwan. Neither Japan Airlines nor ANA has heard a protest from Taiwan, but Japan's broadcaster, NHK, reported that Taiwan's Foreign Ministery Affairs had filed a complaint as a diplomatic mission in Taipei. China has claimed sovereignty over Taiwan since the end of the Chinese civil war in 1949, when the defeated Nationalist government fled to the island.

China's hostility toward Taiwan has grown since Tsai Ing-wen from the pro-independence Democratic Progressive Party won presidential elections on the island in 2016.
