David Davis quits as Brexit Secretary leaving Theresa May facing a crisis

David Davis

At least 48 Tory MPs - 15% of the party's 316-strong representation in the Commons - must write to the chairman of the backbench 1922 Committee, Sir Graham Brady, to trigger a no-confidence vote.

Davis said he could not support May's plan to maintain close trade and regulatory ties with the European Union, which he said gave "too much away, too easily".

May's Cabinet agreed to the plan after a 12-hour meeting Friday, but government unity began to fray within hours.

With May looking at a busy week - a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit and hosting Donald Trump - she is not out of danger yet.

Mr Davis said "the general direction of policy will leave us in at best a weak negotiating position, and possibly an inescapable one". "More and more members of the public know the only way to sort this political mess out is to take back control of the process with a People's Vote on the final Brexit deal". "It's not even an accidental betrayal, it was planned and plotted well in advance", said Conservative lawmaker Andrew Bridgen.

The Sun, Britain's biggest-selling newspaper, which has long argued for Brexit, said May had made "blunder after blunder".

Still, the apparent lack of an imminent threat to May helped the pound gain on Tuesday, rising 0.2 percent against the dollar as of 9:03 London.

But May's allies fear more resignations may follow.

May must now move quickly to try to win the EU's support for her Brexit proposal to unblock talks. He also warned that Britain was "headed for the status of a colony" within the bloc.

The Brexit white paper will still be published on Thursday despite concerns David Davis and Boris Johnson's resignations would thwart the timetable.

In 1982, three foreign office ministers quit, taking responsibility for Argentina's invasion of the Falkland Islands. The spokesman also confirmed that May "hopes" to name a new foreign minister on Monday night.

But when May appeared in Parliament on Monday afternoon, she didn't look like a woman who was facing an existential crisis.

If she refuses to change course, she could face a leadership challenge. That was a little deceptive.

May told Parliament in a heated session that her plan was "not a betrayal" of the referendum vote. But May left to more cheers.

The Brexiteer said there had been compromise on the Leave side and there needed to be compromise on the Remain side, including getting rid of the "ridiculous notion" of having a second referendum.

In a statement, Johnson savaged May's strategy, accusing her of allowing an optimistic Brexit vision to become clouded by a failure of ambition. He said "the Brexit dream is dying, suffocated by needless self doubt".

The value of the British pound dropped on worldwide markets after Johnson's announcement, having risen after the announcement Friday that a Cabinet deal on Brexit had been agreed.

"You mention the mood at the European Research Group meeting and it was the greatest sense of sadness really".

The EU has demanded the integrity of its single market and customs union be preserved but that there be no physical infrastructure placed on the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic.
