New Orleans family has son’s body displayed in front of TV at wake

Boston Celtics Kyrie Irving drives past Minnesota Timberwolves Jimmy Butler during the second quarter of an NBA basketball in Boston Friday Jan. 5 2018

The family of a New Orleans teen who was killed in a shooting two weeks ago celebrated his life Sunday by choosing to have his body prepared in a unique way. At only 18 years old, this loss weighs heavily on his loved ones. Despite being from New Orleans, Matthews was apparently a huge fan of the Boston Celtics, and his favorite things to do were to play video games and eat junk food.

During his wake at Charbonnet Labat Glapion Funeral Home in Treme, Matthews' family chose to remember him with what he loved most. Friends and family gathered in New Orleans to remember Matthews the way they knew him best.

Matthews was positioned to be sitting in a chair, with a Playstation controller in his hands, with some of his favorite snacks by his side.

The family released images from the wake. We get used to seeing each other occupy certain spaces so I think there's something strangely lovely about wanting to see Renard Matthews in that chair, controller in hand, one last time.
