Thai Cave Rescue Operation Suspended After 4 More Boys Freed

Rescuers have resumed a rescue operation for a third day to free four remaining boys and their soccer coach trapped in a cave in northern Thailand.

For the first four rescues on Sunday, two divers accompanied each boy, one from the side and one from behind. Another five still await rescue, including the team's 25-year-old coach.

The boys have been in the cave since June 23 when they were exploring the cave and unexpected rain flooded the tunnels. But "if everything goes right, we will see four kids and the doctor and the [three] SEALs that have stayed with the kids all come".

This is the third mission that has been undertaken by the Thai authorities in order to rescue the young boys, who became trapped in the cave by rising floodwater several weeks ago.

"We thank the God of the rain. We can see that everything is ok as they're eating well", he said. "We can't visit our boys in hospital because they need to be monitored for 48 hours", Somboon told Reuters. "If I ask too much, he might not provide it".

The hazardous bid to rescue the boys - aged between 11 and 16 - started unexpectedly on Sunday when the rescue team said conditions were flawless for the evacuation.

A nutritionist is monitoring their diet and has recommended that they eat nothing spicy or salty - despite the boys' cravings for spicy basil pork and rice, and grilled pork. "Everyone is in high spirits and are happy to get out".

Their friends were full of optimism - and worry.

Crowds at the teeming rescue site cheer the good news, but attention soon turns to the hard task of getting the boys out safely.

"Even when my friends have left the cave, I'm anxious about their physical well-being".

"Now they have no fever and can do their normal activities", Chokedamrongsuk said.

Reuters reported that eight players have been rescued in risky attempts by a world-class worldwide team of divers.

Witnesses say the boys freed Monday were treated at a make-shift hospital at the site, before being taken to a local hospital. Workers have been laboring around the clock to pump water out of the cave, and authorities said Monday that heavy downpours overnight did not raise water levels inside.

Another and perhaps more worrying concern was that oxygen levels in the complex were falling close to risky levels.

Thai Navy SEALS on Monday proudly announced their latest successful extraction of four youth soccer players trapped in a cave by adopting the U.S. Navy's "Hooyah!" The distance from where the crew is trapped to the main entrance is about a half a mile, and the boys had to travel most of that distance underwater to reach freedom. The diver, the first fatality of the rescue effort, was working in a volunteer capacity and died on a mission to place air canisters along the passage to where the boys are, necessary for divers to safely travel the five- to six-hour route. The safety of the divers, who have meticulously planned the mission, is also paramount.

"Today we might have to wait longer, but it will be worth the longer wait", the rescue chief said, per The Australian.
