National media reports indicate that Trump is considering the pluses and minuses of four finalists, all of them federal appeals court judges: Brett Kavanaugh of Washington, D.C.; Thomas Hardiman of Pennsylvania; Amy Coney Barrett of IN; and Raymond Kethledge of MI.

Another contender Judge Raymond Kethlidge made headlines blasting the IRS over its treatment of tea party groups.

Thomas Hardiman, 53, who sits on the 3rd US Circuit Court of Appeals, is also thought to be on Trump's list.

"One of the really important things when evaluating potential members of the bench is make sure they have respect for precedent", Leo said, adding "all" four have a record of doing so.

President Trump has yet to make a final decision on his pick to replace outgoing Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy, but says he is "very close". "And that's really ultimately what drives the conservative legal movement..." Democratic Sen. Doug Jones of Alabama faces reelection in 2020. Not long after Schumer spoke, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell accused the "far left" of engaging in "scare tactics" over the nominee.

Some conservatives have expressed concerns about Kavanaugh - a longtime judge and a former clerk for Kennedy - questioning his commitment to social issues like abortion and noting his time serving under President George W. Bush as evidence he is a more establishment choice.

The nominee is expected to meet in coming days with senators at their offices, going door-to-door in get-to-know-you sessions ahead of confirmation hearings.

The White House has tapped former Republican Sen.

"I think the path to confirmation for any of the final four is not a problem", he told CNN.

Trump is said to have apparently lost interest in Kethledge.

The campaign is set to launch "as soon as the nominee is announced", according to Judicial Crisis Network. Dick Durbin, said fighting Trump's choice is "about more than the next election" and conceded that it could affect the political future of red-state Democratic senators this fall.

Any of the candidates on Trump's short list would probably move the court to the right.

"Remember, the President ran on the Supreme Court issue and that greatly enthused voters", Leonard Leo, who is now on leave from the Federalist Society, where he helped craft Trump's list of candidates, said on ABC's "This Week" Sunday.

In a wider sense, his nominee will also represent a triumph for conservatism and the organized effort to promote vetted conservative judges that offered McConnell a pipeline of candidates for lower courts and now is reaching the ultimate prize - a solid Supreme Court majority. The ad is expected to feature an introductory bio on the president's yet-to-be-named Supreme Court nominee.
