Face of Brexit Boris Johnson resigns, plunging May into crisis

Boris Johnson resigns in major Brexit blow to UK PM Theresa May

In Theresa May's latest Cabinet reshuffle, Matt Hancock replaces Jeremy Hunt as Health and Social Care Secretary, with Jeremy Wright replacing him as Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Secretary, Downing Street said.

"The Queen has been pleased to approve the appointment of".

May's government was rocked overnight by the resignations of Johnson and Brexit Secretary David Davis.

Some euroskeptic lawmakers dream of replacing May with a staunch Brexiteer such as Johnson, a populist, polarizing figure who has never made a secret of his ambition to be prime minister.

The former management consultant was an ardent backer of Remain during the 2016 European Union referendum, warning that Brexit could "harm the NHS".

Johnson said in his letter that May's plan to keep close economic ties with the bloc means Britain is heading for a "semi Brexit" that would leave Britain with the "status of a colony" of the EU.

Writing on Twitter, he added: "Huge honour to be appointed Foreign Secretary at this critical moment in our country's history".

"It seems to me we're giving too much away, too easily, and that's a risky strategy at this time", Davis said in a BBC radio interview Monday morning.

Among Tory Brexiteers there was deepening anger at the proposals agreed at Friday's meeting of the Cabinet at Chequers which they branded as "Brexit in name only".

With Johnson's resignation, a noisy rebellion among the ranks could gather steam. "Two secretaries of state have resigned and still we are no clearer as to what our future relationship with our nearest neighbors and biggest trading partners will be".

In her statement Prime Minister vowed to deliver "a Brexit that is in our national interest, the right Brexit deal for Britain". Under Conservative Party rules, a leadership race could be triggered if at least 48 of her MPs declared their support for one.

But in parliament, her words suggested she had chose to face down the dissenters rather than change her plans.

This week just got a little bit longer for all parties.
