Microsoft’s $399 Surface Go is announced at last
First, let's take a look at the difference in screensize and technology: the Surface Go sports a 10-inch PixelSense display with a 3:2 aspect ratio and a resolution of 1800 x 1200 pixels, while the iPad has a 9.7-inch screen with a 1536 x 2048 pixel resolution.
Microsoft recently expanded its Surface range of personal computers and the flagship will allow these new products to be available to Taiwanese consumers in the shortest possible time, according to Chang. LTE variants of the Surface Go should come to the market at a later date.
It's powered by an IntelPentium Gold processor (yeah, they still make Pentiums), which should be plenty good enough for everyday computing - particularly considering that it runs Windows 10 Home in S mode.
As mentioned, the Surface Go follows Microsoft's Surface design and it appears to be a smaller version of the Surface Pro that was introduced in 2014 with the Surface Pro 3. Microsoft promises the Surface Go can handle productivity apps like Office and casual apps like Spotify and Netflix.
From there, Microsoft is offering configurations with 8GB of RAM paired with 128GB or 256GB of storage, with either model having LTE options available later this year. They will obviously use a metal body and will sport USB Type-C connectivity, as well as microSD support. That is likely one reason the Surface Go is Intel-, not ARM-based for now, anyway. Microsoft claims it's around 30 percent faster than the Surface 3's quad-core Atom - this isn't a high-end machine, it's something far more portable.
There is also a 5MP selfie camera in front alongside a Windows Hello face sign-in camera so you can log in with facial recognition.
One thing that wasn't true about the leaks is that the base model does not come with a Pentium Silver processor, or a Pentium Gold 4410Y for that matter.
Some of the accessories that will be available for the Surface Go include Type Cover (black) worth $99, Signature Type Cover in red, blue and silver for $129, Surface Mobile Mouse for $34 and Surface Pen for $99. The Surface Go is a 10-inch tablet that starts at a pocket-friendly $399, but you'll need to pony up more cash for more storage and memory. You'll also get the friction kickstand found on the Surface Pro so it's definitely still firmly within the Surface family of devices. The Go weighs 1.15 lbs, a little heavier than the iPad, but also about half a pound lighter than the beefier Surface Pro. However, users can upgrade to a full version of Windows 10 for free.
For starters, the Surface Go is looking like a much better deal in the education sector than the latest iPad at practically all levels, even with a premium on it over Apple's tablet. The device will be shipped starting August 2.
