Supreme jockeying ahead of Donald Trump’s prime-time reveal of court pick

Democratic Senators Issue Last-Minute Warnings About Trump's Supreme Court Pick

Democrats' long-shot plan to stop Trump's Supreme Court pick

Both endorsed Kavanaugh's candidacy for the high court in a letter addressed to Congressional leaders including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.

The pick is expected to receive backlash from Democrats as the 2018 Mid-Term Election nears closer.

Bidwill, who serves as the Cardinals' president, organized his fellow alumni to sign a letter backing Kavanaugh's nomination to the Supreme Court.

And Kentucky Republican Sen.

Judge Kavanaugh would have ruled to strike down Obamacare as unconstitutional.

The president has already begun using the high court vacancy as a rallying cry as he campaigns for Republicans across the country.

Republicans changed the Senate's rules previous year to allow them to confirm a Supreme Court justice with a simple majority vote.

Before announcing his choice, Trump paused a moment to thank Kennedy for a lifetime of service. He was a runner-up previous year when Trump nominated Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court.

Trump also met with Republican Sens. While he has yet to reveal his sentiments on the 1973 Supreme Court decision that established a constitutional right to abortion access, he was involved with a dispute over whether a pregnant migrant woman who was being held by immigration authorities could receive an abortion in 2017, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The nominee's fate may rest with two Republican senators who back abortion rights, Susan Collins of ME and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska.

The candidates on Trump's shortlist are Brett Kavanaugh, a former adviser to George W. Bush, Raymond Kethledge, a strict interpreter of the US Constitution, Amy Coney Barrett, a devout Catholic and social conservative, and Thomas Hardiman, a staunch gun rights advocate.

"In surrounding states Missouri, Indiana, Kentucky, I think all very likely to pass more restrictive laws if they are able to", Macias said.

Republican Sen. John Kennedy of Louisiana said he was bracing for a tough confirmation battle as Democrats focus on abortion.

The director of "Avengers: Age of Ultron" told fans late Monday that President Trump will usher in an era worse than anything conceived by a Marvel supervillain. He said Sunday on CNN that he is "concerned about this nomination" but cautioned that it was too early to say how he planned to vote.

One of the judges on Trump's shortlist, Amy Coney Barrett, serves on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit in Donnelly's home state of in - a factor that could make the lawmaker more likely to vote in favor should Barrett be the nominee.

McConnell and Trump were rewarded this year with a string of 5-4 decisions in which Gorsuch cast votes favorable to the president and the GOP.

And his practice of endlessly hyping his Supreme Court nominations - seeking to build the suspense of a prime-time reality show - has gotten voters to pay more attention to the important-but-often-boring matter of judicial selection. The White House prepared briefing materials on all four. Republicans have a razor-thin Senate majority. And the president moved swiftly to fill those openings with young, conservative judges.

The official says Trump decided on Kavanaugh because of his large body of jurisprudence cited by other courts, describing him as a judge that other judges read.

Kethledge, 51, sits on the Sixth Circuit appeals court.
