Thailand Cave Rescue Saves 8 Children Trapped For Weeks Underground
Federation Internationale de Football Association expressed "profound gratitude to all persons involved in the rescue operation", and condolences for the family of the Thai Navy SEAL diver who died.
Divers, however, rescued the remaining boys and their 25-year-old coach without the help of Musk's submarine.
Eight more boys had been rescued in the previous two days after becoming trapped by rising water levels.
The disappearance of the boys and their novice monk turned soccercoach from this small town on the Thailand-Myanmar border - remarkably found alive nine days after they went missing June 23 - launched an extraordinary saga of global cooperation and ingenuity, as experts from many fields planned how to maneuver all 13 out alive. That's where British divers found them days later, alive and in relatively good health.
The boys and their coach have now all been taken to hospital after the three-day evacuation that was a battle against heavy, predicted rain.
Two of the boys had suspected lung infections but the four boys from the first group rescued were all walking around in hospital.
Simmee Oupra has volunteered as a translator for the past 10 days at the press centre near the cave where 12 young boys and their soccercoach have been trapped for nearly three weeks.
However, officials say at least 3 Navy SEAL divers and a doctor are still inside the cave.
Eight of the boys were brought out on stretchers over the first two days - four on Sunday and four on Monday. Four boys and the coach are still deep inside, and authorities have indicated they're continuing with their so-far successful effort to bring the boys out guided by experienced divers.
A letter sent to the president of the Football Association of Thailand invited the youngsters and their coach to the final in Russian Federation if they were also healthy enough to travel.
Samarn Poonan, 38, a former member of Thailand's elite navy SEAL unit, died last Thursday night as he worked underwater in the cave complex, laying oxygen tanks along a potential exit route.
The boys were malnourished and weak, and doctors are probably anxious they could be susceptible to germs spread by family members or other visitors, said W Ian Lipkin, a Columbia University infectious diseases expert.
The boys remain in quarantine but some of their parents have been able to see their children through the glass.
Experts have previously weighed in on the Tesla, SpaceX, and The Boring Company CEO's proposed plans, and said Musks' team may not be of much use due to huge numbers of experts already working on the rescue.
"We did something nobody thought possible", the acting governor of Chiang Rai province, Narongsak Osatanakorn, said once the 18-day ordeal was over.
