When it was announced back in May that Fernando Torres was set to bring an end to his second spell at Atletico Madrid, some of the more optimistic members of the Rangers support were genuinely dreaming of watching the legendary striker see out his Autumn days at Ibrox next season.

The move comes after Torres chose to join J-League strugglers Sagan Tosu instead of coming Down Under, with Sydney FC and Melbourne Victory keen to sign the former Atletico Madrid hitman.

The former Spain worldwide, who was part of the country's 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012 winning squads, has scored 38 goals in 110 appearances for La Roja and netted 82 and 65 times, respectively, during his stints with Atleti and Liverpool.

"El Nino" ended a second spell with his beloved Atletico Madrid in the most flawless way by lifting his first meaningful trophy with the club and has now joined his former Spain teammate Andres Iniesta in making the move to Japan.

Torres, who won the 2010 World Cup and the 2008 and 2010 European Championships with Spain, scored 38 goals in 110 appearances for his country and struck 118 times in two spells at Atletico.

His contract expired at the end of the 2017-18 season and he will continue his career in Asia, following in the footsteps of Barcelona legend Iniesta.

"Sagan Tosu was one of the first clubs to be interested in me, they have convinced me with their sporting project".

"We have had offers from every continent".

"I have had offers from France, Germany and even one from Spain, but at no point did I ever think about going to another European team".

Torres joins Sagan Tosu with the club in the bottom three after 15 games.
