Joaquin Phoenix’s ‘Joker’ Movie Gets the Greenlight, Will Shoot in the Fall

It’s official: Joaquin Phoenix to play The Joker in new origin film

Now it seems actor Joaquin Phoenix is going to try his hand at playing the DC Comics psychopath with a sick sense of humor in a new origin-story movie green-lit by Warner Bros. Phoenix's movie is getting fast-tracked and could even be ready for a 2019 release if Warner Bros. plays its cards right. In March, a report suggested that the film would follow the Joker as an '80s comedian, who turns to a life of crime after his stand-up career fails. Phoenix entered talks to take on the role this past February, but this was far from a done deal as the Oscar-nominated actor had previously been in prolonged talks to lead Marvel's Doctor Strange before ultimately backing out.

That's a small budget compared to other superhero blockbusters, but the studio intends for this movie to be more of a "gritty character study" than a standard superhero flick.

The Hollywood Reporter first reported the greenlight.

From a screenplay by Scott Silver (The Finest Hours) and Todd Phillips (The Hangover), Phillips will begin directing this picture in September, on location in NY.

"I don't know...it could be an interesting character, I don't know", Phoenix told Fandango in April, adding that he wouldn't be opposed to comic book movies if the conditions were right. And yes, the Jared Leto Joker movie is still in development.

"Well, the one thing that only consistently motivates me is the character and the filmmaker".

No release date for the film has reportedly been set.
