Shark bites University of Miami student in Bahamas

Instagram Model Katarina Zarutskie Savaged by Shark During Bahamas Vacation

When asked why she went ahead anyway, she replied, "It's just a once-in-a-lifetime experience". She said she later learned that the risk of infection meant she could have lost her arm or her life. The man who owns the marina said nurse sharks are normally docile but said those sharks could have been feeding, so Zarutskie's exposed fingers and limbs might have been tempting.

Despite warnings from her boyfriend and his family, the nursing student and native of California had purposely gone into the water, which had nurse sharks - known to be harmless to humans - swimming nearby.

Ms Zarutskie has permanent scarring from the attack. Luckily, she's okay...but the photo of her bite is quite brutal. "And it was very humbling that you still don't blame what happened on the shark". I wasn't screaming and crying. "It was a testament to how calm I stayed".

Would she swim with sharks again? She quickly realized it was best to pull her arm out of the water so blood wouldn't attract more of the creatures, and she was able to get to safety before any more damage was done.

It seems like every time you pose for a photo for your Instagram, you're always getting attacked by sharks, right?

Zarutskie has almost doubled her following on Instagram since her story came out; however, she has since made her account private, partly because she has "received a lot of rude and hateful comments from people that were saying ridiculous things", she told BBC.

"It was a big accident". We're so glad she's okay.

When asked whether she went into the water because the the post would generate a lot of hits on Instagram and increase the number of followers, Zarutskie replied "no". The sharks, however, will bite people as a defense if they are stepped on or bothered. Zarutskie encountered multiple complications and doctors believe there may still be "pieces of the tooth" lodged in her arm. The same could not be said for her family.
