North Korean officials did not turn up to a Thursday meeting with the USA military about repatriating the remains of the war dead, according to a US official with knowledge of the situation.

The last return of US remains between 1990 and 1995 involved just over 200 caskets. North Korea said Saturday it was seeking the "earliest start of the working-level talks" on the recovery of USA remains.

It would be the first such repatriation in more than a decade after a joint search effort was halted amid rising tensions over the North's nuclear weapons program.

North Korea's criticism of talks with Pompeo fueled further doubts about whether Trump will ever achieve his goal of "complete denuclearization", much less on the timeline of one to 2-1/2 years set out by various administration officials.

The two countries technically remain in conflict after the 1950-53 Korean War ended without a peace treaty, and all cross-border civilian contact - including trips, letters, or emails - are banned unless endorsed by both governments. Identities would not be confirmed until after what is often a lengthy and complicated forensics process.

On June 23, the Pentagon confirmed that it had moved 100 wooden coffins to the DMZ to receive the remains that North Korea promised to return and would soon move another 158 metal transfer cases to the border.

The remains of almost 8,000 USA troops remain unaccounted for on the Korean peninsula, and 5,300 of those bodies are believed to be located somewhere north of the demilitarized zone.

The letter comes days after the North Korean Foreign Ministry released a statement accusing the USA of "ganster-like" demands and trying to unilaterally pressure the country into abandoning its nuclear weapons.

It had been expected at the inter-Korean truce village of Panmunjom.

President Donald Trump said he hasn't yet given Kim Jong Un a CD with the song "Rocket Man" he autographed, but still plans to.

North Korea proposed to reschedule the meeting for Sunday.

Trump called Kim "Little Rocket Man" or "Rocket Man" in several tweets in 2017 and early 2018 and has said that North Korea's continued threats against the US would be "met with fire and fury like the world has never seen". "We're going to continue to work through that", the vice president said.
