Panthers pass on 2018 supplemental draft class

By choosing Beal, who capped his collegiate career with 96 tackles, two interceptions, 21 pass breakups, the Giants forfeited their third-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft next April. Only five players were made available in the draft, which occurs when a player's college status changes. While his reaction and timing against more capable receivers needs improvement, he is able to stay physical and bend in perimeter coverage.

The only time the Lions were awarded a player in the supplemental draft was in 1982, when they nabbed Kevin Robinson, a cornerback out of North Carolina A&T.

Bryant told's Chase Goodbread that Indianapolis and Baltimore were his two favorite interviews. During that break, usually sometime in July, the league holds a Supplemental Draft. They owned the fourth pick in each round of the draft after a weighted lottery was performed before it began.

Beal was the 44th player selected in the NFL Supplemental Draft since its inception in 1977.

Spending an early pick on a cornerback who won't play this season seems irresponsible, especially for a team that's going all in on winning a title next season. He previously has been clocked in the 4.3s in the 40 and was known in the football program as one of if not the best athlete on the team.

There were a few players that might have had the Colts' interest, including Beal. The other one who had a chance to be drafted was Mississippi State defensive back Brandon Bryant. They should certainly consider it and potentially bid a late-rounder for a guy like Beal - even though it won't be enough to get him - but anything more than a fifth-round pick should be out of the question. Remember, the Colts have an extra second-round selection from the trade with the Jets.

Perhaps, the reason why the Texans haven't selected anyone in the supplemental draft since them is that neither turned out great.

Typically the price is high for a team to take a player in this draft. If a player is not selected in the first round, the process repeats in the second round, and so on. So the Cleveland Browns have the definitive best shot at landing the top pick, but they can not fall out of the first group.

If another team that wasn't in the playoffs last season put in a third-round bid for Beal, along with the Chiefs, he would go that other team. This year is different; there's three. Wide receiver Terrelle Pryor was a third-round pick of the Oakland Raiders the previous year.

The most famous Supplemental Draft was the one conducted in 1985, when University of Miami quarterback Bernie Kosar ended up with the Cleveland Browns, his preferred destination.
