"If you can imagine being physically and mentally exhausted going through a rescue and having to deal with that, when you're at your lowest ebb, you've given it all and then you find out the sad news about your father, who's your best mate - that's really, really tough", Pearce said.

Some of the boys rescued from a Thai cave seen in hospital in Chiang Rai.

Musk suggests a series of tubes could be sent through the cave network and inflated, creating a tunnel for the team to travel through without needing to scuba dive.

It was the sudden onset of that rainy season that trapped the boys deep underground while they were exploring.

"We would love to welcome the team from Wild Boars Football Club and their rescuers", the club tweeted.

"Although his technology is good and sophisticated, it's not practical for this mission", the rescue chief said.

The details of the complex operation are among the first to emerge from a rescue effort to save 12 boys and their football coach that has been shrouded in secrecy since it began on Sunday and ended successfully three days later.

A video of the boys in hospital was shown at the news conference. Three have slight lung infections.

With the boys still recuperating in hospital, US-based production companies have already taken an interest in turning their story into a motion picture. The boys, their faces covered by green surgical masks, flashed the V-for-Victory sign as they sat up in bed and chatted with their nurses, at times responding with the customary Thai sign of respect - hands pressed together while bowing the head.

Water pumps failed hours after the last boy was saved, sending rescue workers scrambling out for safety.

A Thai health official yesterday said most of the boys, who are aged 11 to 16, had lost weight but were in good condition and showed no signs of stress. He lauded the cooperation between Thai and worldwide rescuers.

The SEALs commander, Rear Adm. Apakorn Youkongkae, said the boys' coach, Ekkapol Chantawong, told SEALs the order the boys should be rescued in.

Highlighting the dangers, a former Thai navy SEAL volunteering to work on the rescue died on July 7 during a supply mission inside the cave.

His employer, South Australia's ambulance service, said his family's grief had been "magnified" by the physical and emotional demands of the rescue operation. Officials initially anxious they could remain trapped for months.
