After 66 Years of Growing, Longest Fingernails Are Cut

13 July 2018, 01:14 | Devin Moran

Owner of world's longest nails has them cut after growing them for 66 years

Shridhar Chillal has been flown to the United States from India to cut his nails which will be preserved in a Ripley’s Believe It or Not! museum

He stopped cutting his left-hand fingernails in 1952, after a teacher scolded him for roughhousing with a friend and accidentally breaking off the teacher's fingernail. The 14-year-old then chose to take up a challenge to see how long he could go without trimming his nails. Chillal's fingernail exhibit will be officially unveiled at Ripley's Believe It or Not!

"At the age of 82, having grown the nails on his left hand for 66 years, Sridhar Chillal (Longest fingernails on a single hand - ever) is finally having them cut", the video said.

"It was a very hard decision for me to cut my nails, but when I realised after cutting them they'd be at Ripley's Believe it or Not, and the museum is going to maintain them ... then I felt like I was making the right decision, and that's when I chose to cut my nails".

To that end, you may or may not be aware of Shridhar Chillal - the man with the longest fingernails in the world.

When asked by Guinness World Records in 2015 how his nails affect his life, Shridhar said they were extremely fragile and he needed to take care when sleeping.

They were cut by power tools at a ceremony in NY on Wednesday. I spent 66 years of my life on my nails. Ripley's has flown Chillal from India to the United States to cut his nails and forever memorialise them in a Ripley's Believe It or Not! museum. Times Square museum features 20 galleries and more than 500 artifacts from around the world. "I can't move much, so every half an hour or so I wake up and move my hand to the other side of the bed", he told Guinness World Records. Chillal's longest single nail is his thumbnail, measuring 197.8 centimetres.

The weight of his nails has left him permanently handicapped and in constant pain - he can not open his hand or move his fingers. Odditorium in Times Square.
