Anderson in Wimbledon final after 2nd longest ever Slam match

Anderson beats Isner in longest semi-final in history

American Isner reaches 1st Grand Slam semifinal at Wimbledon

"There could be a little mental aspect in our match", Isner said on Wednesday.

He faced his friend and old college foe Kevin Anderson in the semifinals Friday, where he lost in a game that lasted more than six hours.

In April, John Isner won his first career ATP World Masters 1000 title at the Miami Open. But once upon a time he starred at Page High and became an NCAA All-American player at Georgia.

Isner and Anderson were no strangers to each other, facing off all the way back to their college days, when Isner defeated Anderson, who played at IL, in the 2007 NCAA Men's Team Final.

The pair slugged it out on Centre Court for six hours and 35 minutes before the eighth seed came through 7-6 (8-6) 6-7 (5-7) 6-7 (9-11) 6-4 26-24.

John Isner and Kevin Anderson possess two of the most powerful serves in tennis, and simply could not find a break in their Wimbledon semifinal.

Anderson won the opening set before Isner bounced back to take the next two.

He fashioned three break points from the next rally and took the second, the first break in 49 games. While Isner's match back in 2010 was a fun side note that helped garner interest in the tournament for fans it might not usually reach, to have a never-ending saga played in the semifinal doesn't look great for the sport.

It was a similar tale in the fourth set where the South African broke for 3-2 only to hand the break straight back.

On the most crucial point of the match, Anderson recovered after a fall and hit a lefty forehand to go up 0-30 while Isner was serving at 24-24.

Nadal and Djokovic will battle for Sunday's final on the same court at 4pm.

The 31-year-old is eyeing a 13th major after making the semi-finals of a Slam for the first time since finishing runner-up at the 2016 US Open.
