Isaiah Thomas Expresses Interest In Celtics Return
The Brinks truck is staying in 2017, as the Denver Nuggets have signed Isaiah Thomas to a one-year contract for the league's veteran minimum, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. He was traded to Cleveland last summer along with Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic and a pair of picks for Kyrie Irving. Denver's head coach, Mike Malone, envisions using Thomas to build on leads established by the team's young core, headlined by Jamal Murray, Gary Harris and Nikola Jokic.
After opening his National Basketball Association career with the Sacramento Kings in 2011-12 and subsequently playing for the Phoenix Suns, Thomas exploded into stardom with the Boston Celtics.
Thomas likely sees this as a potential bridge season for him to prove that he's healthy and still capable of being the player he was for the Boston Celtics two seasons ago. With the Cavaliers struggling, however, they dealt Thomas, Channing Frye and a 2018 first-round draft pick to the Los Angeles Lakers on February 8 for Jordan Clarkson and Larry Nance Jr. In addition to not meshing with James upon his return to game action, Thomas never appeared to be on the same page as Cavs coach Ty Lue (Thomas at one point questioned the Cavs' coaching techniques), and shot at a career-worst 25.3 percent behind the arc before he was shipped to the Lakers near the trade deadline.
Isaiah Thomas, a perpetual 5-foot-9 underdog who had constantly been a part of one trade package or another, had become an MVP candidate in his second full season as the team's point guard. He averaged 15.2 points and 4.8 assists, a far cry from his All-Star seasons with the Celtics.
