Matt McClain Washington Post Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh
A Republican strategist involved in Senate races said court appointments are hugely motivating factors for evangelical voters and some rank-and-file Republicans who weren't Trump supporters right away.
The poll, released Thursday, found that 64 percent of Americans support the 1973 Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion in the US, and they would not like to see it overturned. Republicans are urging the senators to confirm Kavanaugh to replace retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy.
Kavanaugh, 53, reported debt between $60,000 and $200,000 on three credit cards and a personal loan in 2016, but the debt either was paid off or fell below the required amount to be reported, according to The Post.
Democrats, who are in the minority, may not be able to block him, but they argue that Kavanaugh would shift the court further to the right, potentially threatening access to abortion and undermining the Affordable Care Act. Tim Kaine, D-Va., Clinton's former running mate for tweeting, "Here's what I'm wondering about the #SCOTUSpick: Will Judge Kavanaugh respect rulings to uphold the ACA?"
"The stakes are too high for the American people, who do not want the Supreme Court to advance a political agenda to overturn the law of the land on health care for people with pre-existing conditions, women's reproductive health, and the constitutional rights and freedoms of all Americans", she said.
King also says calls to his office are overwhelmingly opposed to Kavanaugh.
Pro-choice activist groups have decried Kavanaugh's nomination as a threat to women's rights.
The ADL, Greenblatt said, will highlight issues that Kavanaugh should be questioned on by the Senate Judiciary Committee.
While President Trump stands staunchly against the Clean Power Plan, a Supreme Court decision narrowing the authority of the EPA to regulate greenhouse gasses could limit the ability of future administration's to change course.
