South Korea’ Moon says North Korea-U.S. talks ‘on track,’ criticism a ploy

Trump: Kim Will Get 'Rocket Man' CD Later, Plus Surprise 'Little Gift'

US President Donald Trump has published a letter from Kim Jong-un, in which North Korea's leader voices hopes for a "new future" in bilateral relations.

The letter, sent last week, was since followed by a contentious two-day meeting between Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and North Korean officials that ended with a lengthy, barb-filled statement from the North.

President Trump shared a letter from North Korean leader Kim Jong-un on Thursday, praising the work being done with that country.

After Pompeo's talks with North Korean officials last week attempting to nail down details of how and when Pyongyang plans to carry out Kim's pledge to denuclearize the Korean peninsula, North Korea called the talks "regrettable" and said the USA demands were "gangster-like".

Though the secretary of state described the talks as "productive" after they concluded, North Korea's Foreign Ministry later released a statement that criticized the "regrettable" USA negotiating style.

But North Korea's delegation failed show up to a scheduled meeting on Thursdayat the inter-Korean truce village of Panmunjom in the Demilitarized Zone between the two Koreas.

Defence officials have already shipped dozens of cases to Panmunjom in anticipation of receiving the remains of U.S. troops.

The return of U.S. remains was one of the key agreements to come from U.S. President Donald Trump's June summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Last week, North Korea accused the United States of using a "gangster-like" tactics to push it towards nuclear disarmament after a fresh round of high-level talks. "Great progress being made".

Meanwhile, agencies reported that United States asked the UN Security Council to take punitive measures against North Korea for violating restrictions on refined oil imports.

An estimated 30,000 United States soldiers died in the Korean war.

"No one can be optimistic about the results, but my cautious outlook is that the negotiations would be able to succeed if the North carries out a complete denuclearisation, and the global community gathers efforts to provide security guarantees to the North", Moon said.

During an official visit to Britain, Trump posted images of the Korean-language letter from Kim and its English translation.

However, according to the U.S. State Department, . the North contacted the U.S. side, offering to hold the talks on Sunday instead.

But there's growing skepticism in Washington over the Trump administration's engagement with North Korea.

Trump has repeatedly voiced optimism that Kim will dismantle the regime's nuclear weapons program despite recent news reports that North Korea continues to expand its nuclear facilities.

But Pyongyang warned that the future of the peace process was being jeopardised by "unilateral and gangster-like" U.S. demands.

The meeting was to focus on the return of remains of America's war dead killed during the Korean War.

North Korea has said eight of the 17 - including Megumi Yokota, who disappeared while heading home from school when she was 13 - have already died, while four never entered the country, an account Japan has dismissed as unreliable.
