U.S. adult film star Stormy Daniels has been arrested in a strip club in Columbus, Ohio.

Charges have been dropped against adult film star Stormy Daniels, who is locked in a court battle with President Donald Trump, her lawyer said on Thursday following her arrest in OH for allegedly "fondling" patrons at a strip club.

Under Ohio law, strip club patrons and nude or semi-nude employees are not allowed to touch each other.

Avenatti declined to say exactly what happened next, but after Clifford's performance she was taken into custody by male officers and it became evident that the two women were also officers, the lawyer said.

But she said the officers' motivations will be reviewed internally.

USA media tweeted a mugshot of Ms Daniels, purportedly from the Franklin County Sheriff's Office in Columbus.

Although the law has been in effect for over a decade, a 2017 report from The Columbus Dispatch found that it is seldom enforced.

Cohen allegedly paid Daniels $130,000 to keep quiet about her sexual encounter with Mr. Trump.

Daniels was charged with a little-used 2007 OH law, which prohibits strippers from touching patrons - or vice versa - unless they are a relative.

The charges were subsequently dropped.

According to OH law, "No patron who is not a member of the employee's immediate family shall knowingly touch any employee while that employee is nude or seminude or touch the clothing of any employee while that employee is nude or seminude".

Her attorney said Daniels is accused of quote "allowing a customer to touch her while on stage in a non-sexual manner".

Daniels hasn't posted anything on her own social media pages yet, but released a statement Thursday morning through her lawyer, Michael Avenatti.

"I am pleased to report that the charges against my client @stormydaniels have been dismissed in their entirety", Avenatti said on Twitter, thanking prosecutors for their "professionalism". "There has to be higher priorities", he wrote.

"Are you kidding me?" he asked.

Daniels has filed two lawsuits against Trump, one to get out of a non-disclosure agreement she had signed in October 2016 ahead of the November presidential election in exchange for the $130,000, and another for defamation.

Sirens Gentlemen's Club confirmed that Daniels had performed at the Columbus venue on Wednesday night.

Daniels has been on tour since last winter, appearing at strip clubs across the United States, and had been due to perform again at Sirens on Thursday night. Mr Trump denies all allegations.
