President Trump, former President Barack Obama and even Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey saw immediate plunges on their follower counts.

Singer Katy Perry, who has the most-followed account on Twitter, lost 1.5 million followers, dropping 1.4% to 108.1 million followers.

On average, the top 10 most followed accounts, consisting mostly of music celebrities, saw a plunge of around two million.

Twitter, in a blog, stated that it would suspend private accounts in a bid to curb fake news by limiting fake users: "Follower counts are a visible feature, and we want everyone to have confidence that the numbers are meaningful and accurate".

Nobody messes with Twitter, you see.

The accounts would have originally been blocked for tweeting large volumes of unsolicited replies or mentions, sharing links dubbed "misleading", or were being blocked by a large number of accounts after mentioning them.

Twitter is now clamping down on problem accounts, including all locked accounts.

The most-followed account on Twitter belongs to popular singer Katy Perry, who lost 1.5 million followers; the number now stands at 108.1 million. He added in another tweet, "Look, if they're genuinely fake or dead accounts, I have no problem with it.But how do we know?" Amitabh Bachchan has in fact faced the biggest hit by losing out on the maximum number of followers.

The size of the drops were not directly correlated to the amount of initial followers. The politicians now have 101 million and 53.1 million followers, respectively. "We understand this may be hard for some, but we believe accuracy and transparency make Twitter a more trusted service for public conversation", Twitter reiterated.

When the Times story was published, McHenry had 506,478 followers, meaning she's lost almost 56 percent of her Twitter followers since January.

"Though the most significant changes are happening in the next few days, follower counts may continue to change more regularly as part of our ongoing work to proactively identify and challenge problematic accounts", Gadde wrote.
